Visits & Events

One of the best parts of being an author is getting to interact with readers, writers, teachers and librarians.  That’s why I love to do all kinds of events from School Visits to Book Festivals to Library Conferences. Scroll below for School Visit Programs as well as a list of Upcoming Events and Appearances.

SCHOOL VISITS

I love to inspire kids through my own journey to publication (I got my first rejection letter when I was thirteen!), and to empower them to value their own stories and unique voices. My presentations are interactive and engaging with options to suit the size of the group and the needs of teachers/librarians.
Choose from one of the visits listed here or let’s talk about tailoring something special.

Amy’s presentation was fantastic from start to finish- she is engaging, relevant, witty, and meaningful. I know I loved her insight on the revision aspect of the writing process, but more importantly, my students loved it as well. After the presentation, students commented how much they appreciated her wisdom on a topic they are very much familiar with, but often feel in the dark about.
—Michelle Spears, English Teacher, Saguaro H.S.

MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL

THE WRITING PROCESS & HOW IDEAS BECOME BOOKS
Part education, part motivation and 100% entertaining, I share my 30-year path to becoming an author. (I was an overnight success…it just took about 10,950 nights.) 🙂 I’ll talk about ideas and how to start with a “what if” and turn it into a story. Using examples from my rough drafts, I’ll share the importance of revision and the process of getting published. And I’ll leave plenty of time for Q & A so each presentation truly reflects the interests of your group.
45-50 minutes; Powerpoint; single class or large group

“Recently, our school had the privilege of welcoming author Amy Fellner Dominy to our elementary campus.  Her presentation was not only engaging, but educational as well.  I would highly recommend her visits and hope to have her back again next year!”
—Mrs. Mayberry, Resource Center Specialist, Field Elementary

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

STORY TIME & STORY STEW
Get ready for lots of laughs as well as food for thought!  I start with a short introduction, some True and False questions about Dinosaurs, and then read my picture book Cookiesaurus Rex. From there, we’ll talk about how your students can create their own stories with a Story Stew exercise that is as fun as it is educational. I’ll cover the ingredients of story in a visual way even the youngest kids can understand. Together we’ll create stories, reinforcing the lesson and giving them the tools (and motivation) to become storytellers themselves.
Two Authors Instead of One: Nate and I do joint visits whenever possible. Check with me and we can talk about how to schedule a joint visit.
40 minutes; Powerpoint; single classes or larger groups of up to 200

“Amy is a fantastic writing mentor for kids! Her visits are funny, engaging, and definitely informative. My students couldn’t stop talking about it days later! If you’re thinking about bringing her to your school campus, you will not regret it! A combination of hands-on guided writing activities and a question and answer session makes her visits aligned to the common core and tremendously educational.”
—Sheila Rowe, Coyote Ridge Elementary

WRITING WORKSHOPS

SMALL GROUP WORKSHOPS: DIALOGUE, CHARACTER, STORY PROBLEM
I love teaching craft workshops and I’ll work with teachers on a topic that fits the curriculum. I bring a unique background and experience to my writing workshops because along with being the author of seven books, I’m also a playwright. I use tips and tricks I learned writing for the stage, including Reader’s Theater and writing exercises. Choose from your favorite topic: Dialogue, Character Development, or Creating Dramatic Story Ideas (Character, Goal, Conflict, Consequence.)
45-60 minutes

“The kiddos were abuzz today with connections from your presentation.  Your energy, expertise, and enthusiasm in your presentation definitely connected your love of reading and writing with our students.”
—Ann Godby, Teacher-Librarian, Louisville Elementary, CO

SKYPE VISITS

Have Skype, will travel! 🙂 I’m happy to offer a free Skype visit to your classroom/book club/reading group.  All I ask is that you have a classroom copy of my book. Skype visits will be 30 minutes with the bulk of time for Q & A.
