Example of a Query Letter

Are you wondering what a query letter is? Maybe you’re a writer and you’re wondering what a great query letter looks like. If so, I can’t help you. But, if you’re looking for an example of a query letter good enough to get an editor’s response, then you’ve come to the right place.

This is the first query letter I wrote for MONSTER DOWN DEEP. I had to make a submission deadline so I didn’t have time to finesse. Let me know if you find it helpful by sending a comment. I can also post the query for my upcoming picture book if there’s interest. Here it is:

Dear Editor,

Take an 11-year-old beachcomber afraid of the ocean, a lost diamond necklace with a million-dollar reward, and an ancient fish with an attitude, and you have the ingredients for The Monster Down Deep, a magical-realism novel full of adventure and humor for readers 8-14.

I am the fish they call The Monster Down Deep. Until I meet the human girl Cassie and she names me Blue. Cassie promises me a safe place. I trust her with my life.

Have I made a very not good choice?

11-year-old Cassie Stein used to be a fearless beachcomber until a boogie board accident left her afraid of the ocean. Ashamed, Cassie hides the truth and pulls away from her friends. When a priceless necklace is lost at sea, Cassie sees her chance. If she finds the necklace, she’ll be famous. No one will guess that she’s afraid.

Instead of the necklace, Cassie finds Blue, a fish that might be an even bigger treasure. Soon, Cassie has everything she ever wanted. Until Blue’s life is in danger. To save him, Cassie must risk everything and discovers that while it’s great to be a hero, it’s much better to be a friend.

I’m the award-winning author of nine books for children and teens, including picture books, middle grade and young adult. I’m also a long-time member of SCBWI and really appreciate the opportunity to submit my manuscript to Pushkin Children’s Books.
